Our history
Who Burt Brill & Cardens Are
Our firm was founded by two famous Brighton residents.
In 1893 a young solicitor named Herbert Carden set up on his own in Castle Square Brighton, before buying our office, number 30 Old Steine, at auction in March 1897. He moved in with his young family, working from the front ground floor room while his family occupied the rest of the building.
30 Old Steine already had some legal heritage as it was here, on 16 September 1858, that Edward Marshall Hall was born. Sir Edward was later to be Knighted and appointed Kings Counsel. He was one of the most famous criminal defense counsels of his time.
Charles Burt Brill came from a famous Brighton family. Mr Burt Brill’s grandfather was the owner of Brill’s Baths in Brighton, at the time the largest baths in Europe. Charles set up practice as a solicitor in 1901 and was later joined in partnership by Arthur Edwards, forming Burt Brill & Edwards.
The two firms continued, Cardens being run by a succession of Cardens’ until Kenneth Edwards (confusingly no relation of Arthur Edwards) joined D’Arcy Carden in the early 1960s. In 1986, the two Firms merged, to form Burt Brill & Cardens. Our main office is still based at number 30 Old Steine, where Sir Herbert set up practice over 125 years ago.
