Pricing & Fees

Pricing & Fees at Burt Brill & Cardens

At Burt Brill & Cardens, we know that one of the first questions people have when seeking legal advice is: “How much will it cost?”

The honest answer is that it depends on your particular circumstances. Every case is unique, and so the work required varies. What we can promise is clear communication, fair and transparent fees, and a team committed to giving you the best possible outcome.

We’re trusted solicitors in Brighton and Sussex, working with clients locally and nationally. Our expertise covers Wills, Probate and Trusts, Residential and Commercial Property conveyancing, TOLATA claims, Dispute Resolution, Will Disputes, and Litigation. Whatever your circumstances, we’re here to help.

Why We Don’t Compete on Price

We’re not the cheapest solicitors in Brighton — and we don’t aim to be. Our clients come to us because they want their legal matters handled thoroughly, carefully, and successfully.

We often see situations where someone has chosen a “cheaper” option and ended up with more stress, higher costs, or even an unfavourable outcome that then has to be fixed. As the saying goes, “If you pay cheap, you pay twice.”

At Burt Brill & Cardens, you’re not just paying for time. You’re investing in decades of expertise, a reputation for solving problems others can’t (or won’t), and the reassurance of a team that genuinely wants the best for you.

How Our Fees Work

We believe in transparency and clarity. Before we start, we’ll explain exactly how our fees will be structured and what you can expect.

The most common ways we charge are:

  • Hourly rates
    • Many clients ask, “How much do solicitors charge per hour?” In the UK, hourly rates often vary depending on the seniority of the solicitor and the complexity of the work. At Burt Brill & Cardens, your case is looked after by the right person for the job: senior solicitors handle complex issues, while more straightforward tasks may be managed by junior lawyers or paralegals at a lower rate.
  • Fixed fees
    • For certain services (such as straightforward Wills or standard property conveyancing), we may be able to offer a fixed fee, so you know exactly what to budget for.
  • Staged billing
    • In more complex matters (such as probate disputes or litigation), we may agree fees in stages — for example, initial advice, preparing documents, and court hearings — giving you clarity at every step.

What about additional costs?

Some matters involve disbursements – costs we pay to others on your behalf, such as Land Registry fees, court fees, or barristers’ fees. We’ll always explain these to you in advance so there are no surprises.

All our fees are subject to VAT, currently at 20%.

What Affects the Cost of Your Case?

Every case is different, but here are some of the most common questions we hear:

  • How much does a Will cost?
The cost of making a Will depends on complexity. A straightforward Will may be offered for a fixed fee, while more detailed Wills (for example, those involving Trusts or international assets) are more involved. The average cost of a simple Will is lower than the cost of Wills with Trusts or tax planning.
  • How much does it cost to set up a Trust?
The cost of setting up a Trust (or a Trust Fund in the UK) depends on the assets involved, the type of Trust, and the complexity of your circumstances. Once we understand your situation, we’ll always provide a clear estimate.
  • How much does Probate cost?
The cost of probate depends on the size and complexity of the estate, and whether disputes arise. For a simple estate, fees are lower; for complex estates, or if the Will is contested, costs may be higher. We’ll always be upfront about our likely probate fees and the steps involved. For examples of how much probate could cost, head to: Probate Solicitors in Brighton.
  • What are conveyancing fees?
Whether you’re buying or selling a property, conveyancing involves third-party costs such as Land Registry fees, search fees, and Stamp Duty, alongside our professional fees. We’ll give you a clear breakdown before we begin. For more information on what the conveyancing process entails and the cost, visit our residential property page: What Is Conveyancing?
  • How much does a TOLATA claim cost?
TOLATA (Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act) claims are often complex, as they involve property disputes between co-owners. Costs depend on whether matters can be settled through negotiation or whether court proceedings are required. We’ll give you a clear view of the likely costs and stages involved.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Fees

Why don’t you publish exact prices online?

Because every case is different, publishing a “one-size-fits-all” fee could be misleading. Instead, we provide a tailored estimate once we know more about your situation.

Can you give me an estimate before I commit?

Yes. Once we understand your case, we’ll give you a clear estimate or fixed fee where possible.

What if my case is simple?

Then your fees will reflect that. We don’t overcomplicate matters, and we’ll only charge for the work that genuinely needs to be done.

Will I be kept informed of costs?

Absolutely. We provide regular updates and will discuss any changes in scope or cost with you before proceeding.

Why should I choose Burt Brill & Cardens over a cheaper solicitor?

Because we combine experience, thoroughness, and a proven track record of resolving even the most complex matters. Many of our clients come to us after other solicitors have failed them. Choosing the right solicitor from the start saves time, money, and stress in the long run. Meet our team.

Do you charge for an initial consultation?

We’ll always explain up front whether your first meeting is free or charged. In many cases, an initial consultation is a cost-effective way to get early advice and clarity.

How do I pay my solicitor?

We usually invoice by bank transfer, though card payments and staged billing may also be available. We’ll explain payment options when we send your engagement letter.

Can I get a fixed fee for making a Will?

Yes, for straightforward Wills, we can usually offer a fixed fee. If your Will involves Trusts, overseas property, or complex arrangements, we’ll give you a clear, tailored estimate.

What’s included in conveyancing fees?

Our conveyancing fees cover the legal work of transferring property ownership. On top of this, you’ll need to budget for third-party costs such as Land Registry fees, Stamp Duty, and searches. We’ll provide a full breakdown before you commit.

How much does it cost to set up a Trust Fund in the UK?

This depends on the type of Trust and the assets involved. Setting up a Trust for children, for example, is usually less complex than setting up a family Trust with multiple properties. We’ll advise you on the most cost-effective solution for your situation.

What happens if my case takes longer than expected?

If extra work is needed, we’ll let you know straight away and explain why. You’ll never be surprised by a bill without prior discussion.

Do you add hidden charges?

No. We’re fully transparent. All fees, VAT, and disbursements are explained clearly, and we’ll keep you updated throughout.

Can you take over from another solicitor?

Yes. Many of our clients come to us after a previous solicitor couldn’t resolve their matter. We’ll review the work done so far, advise on costs, and help you move forward.

Can you help if I’m outside Brighton or Sussex?

Absolutely. While we’re proud to be solicitors in Brighton, we act for clients across Sussex and the UK. In many cases, much of the work can be done by phone, email, or video call.

Do you offer Legal Aid?

We don’t offer Legal Aid. We focus on providing high-quality legal services on a privately funded basis, with clear fee structures to suit your needs. The types of cases we take are rarely the kind that require legal aid.

What’s the difference between solicitors’ fees and disbursements?

Solicitors’ fees are for the work we do. Disbursements are third-party costs, such as court fees, barrister fees, or Land Registry charges, which we pay on your behalf.

What if I can’t afford to pay all at once?

We may be able to arrange staged payments, depending on the nature of your case. Please speak to us early so we can discuss options.

Do you offer ‘no win, no fee’?

No. This isn’t appropriate for the types of legal work we do (such as Wills, probate, conveyancing, and TOLATA claims). We’ll always explain how fees will apply before we begin.
