University of Sussex Alumni Interview – Bryony Spicer

1. What attracted you to work at Burt Brill & Cardens?

Because Burt Brill & Cardens is a smaller law firm I felt that it would not only offer more potential for professional growth prospects but also provide more personal support to its employees. In contrast to larger corporate firms, it appeared to be more supportive and have more of a personal touch.

2. Why did you choose to study law at the University of Sussex? (or if not law, your chosen subject)

I already liked the city of Brighton and by studying here it would allow me to stay in close proximity to my family. Additionally, I like that the university’s law faculty was in the top 20 within the UK. They also provided the opportunity to study abroad and engage in practical legal experiences through legal clinics which greatly excited me.

3. Do you have any role models in the legal landscape?

One source of inspiration within the legal landscape is the iconic portrayal of Erin Brockovich in the 2000 film. The real-life story continues to inspire me to be an advocate for those in need within the legal realm.

4. What advice do you have for recent graduates who are job searching?

Prioritize the qualities of the working environment and the potential for career progression over the prestige of a firm’s name. Reflect on your long-term goals, values and the culture that aligns with your aspirations.

Bryony assists with a wide range of Family matters including Divorce and child arrangements.

Before joining Burt Brill & Cardens, Bryony studied LLB Law at the University of Sussex.
